Preheat oven to 190’C
Melt shortening in a saucepan
Add sugar and syrup / treacle and mix well
Make sure the sugar is fully dissolved
Sift all the flour, baking soda, nutmeg, salt and ginger together in a mixing bowl.
Gradually stir in 4 cups of the dry ingredients into the melted shortening mixture.
Cut mix onto bench top and knead in the last cup of dry ingredients by hand.
When thoroughly mixed, divide into 3 equal parts and shape each part into a ball.
Put each ball onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
Roll each ball into a rectangle ¼” thick
Press each cutter to cut out the shapes of the house
Remove excess dough and bake right on the cookie sheet
Bake in oven for 13 – 15 minutes or until lightly brown
